Do you mean quilt shows, art quilt shows or art shows? As a SAQA member, I would say the preference among members is very abstract, and same at the big shows like Quilt National. However, I too love abstracted work; it just depends what it is, I really love what I call "abstracted reality".
ElaineElaine Quehlhttp://www.equarelle.canoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8222373504029195323.post-56985542543413267362012-07-16T18:26:26.455-07:002012-07-16T18:26:26.455-07:00Margaret,

I used to be so married to my photo, wanting to recreate everything in it and being lost if I thought about not doing so. It takes some time and practice to start moving past that.
ElaineElaine Quehlhttp://www.equarelle.canoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8222373504029195323.post-11844331361214289102012-07-16T18:23:10.321-07:002012-07-16T18:23:10.321-07:00Martha,

But for some reason the momentum always gets interrupted and I go long stretches without any sketching. Same thing with stitching ... I did some stitching yesterday and it felt oh so good!
ElaineElaine Quehlhttp://www.equarelle.canoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8222373504029195323.post-82109527145038709042012-07-15T15:54:23.617-07:002012-07-15T15:54:23.617-07:00Spent many years studying realism with a fantastic...Spent many years studying realism with a fantastic master painter. Realism lost favor with the art world, but not with the public. In the world of fabric artists, realism seems to be gaining popularity at the shows. I seem to prefer the more abstract compositions for fiber. It's a complicated issue. Formal art training is beneficial for both, I think.Judy Fergusonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04180946416704333537noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8222373504029195323.post-16094018934578956682012-07-15T12:40:12.415-07:002012-07-15T12:40:12.415-07:00It is becoming very clear to me that using one pho...It is becoming very clear to me that using one photograph is seldom ever going to provide the best composition, and placing the elements exactly where they are in the photograph isn't going to give you the best composition either. What great advice -- and one would think this would be obvious, but it's not, really.
