New Work

Last night I went to bed and wondered why I couldn't sleep? Well could it be because I had been working with the colour red up until 2:30 a.m.? Yes, I put the red stool on "Red Stool". Here it is. There are still a few values to tweak and decisions to be made on how to finish it. Am I going to leave the legs dangling off the bottom and have an irregular edge on the top?
I tried adding a dark green behind the foliage and the lower edges of the stool legs and then scanned it into my computer.
Not bad, and it does balance out the stool a bit. What do you think?

My striped dahlia (still unnamed) is quilted and faced as well. I decided on facing because the stems and leaves travel off the piece, and a dark binding would have just cut them off. I wanted them to travel off the edge.

  1. Oh yes! The darker "edges" (top and bottom) make the rest of it "pop". :-)

  2. okay, shoot me, but the dark on the bottom is fine, just where it joins the hostas, the straight line really stands out to me. Kinda would like a lone hosta leaf or two to hang over the dark green... just my humble opinion... do love the stool and your unnamed piece is beautiful!

  3. I just love your dahlia piece--I'm going to use some of my shibori fabric I've made to make a floral piece because you've inspired me! Thanks!

  4. oh, love seeing your new works! I might be wierd, but I just LOVED the Red Stool without any background!(top picture)Or maybe if you will leave the dark background, have some hosta leaves come into the bottom dark green...maybe in the right corner? Rambling here, but still love the one without dark green! :) The first thing I thought of, when looking into the lovely striped dahlia was - Behind the scenes - I also love to take pictures of flowers from the "back" and feel that sometimes even more beauty is there...kinda "behind the scenes", since everyone always admires the front of the flowers, mostly. :)
    Thanks for the inspirational post!

  5. for what it's worth, the darker background.

  6. For what it's worth, I prefer the stool with the legs dangling primarily because the straight, hard line is jarring to my eye. Nothing else is so linear in your piece. The line creates a space that makes me think the stool needs to be grounded, which it's not. Without it, I can imagine its placement better.

  8. Thank you everyone! Now that a few have mentioned it and I have looked longer, I do agree that the straight line at the bottom is jarring. Marija, I like your name suggestion "Behind the Scene" ... especially so since most of my foliage work is named after parts of a theatre production (Opening Act, Act 1, 2, 3, In the Act, Standing Ovation, etc.). Agree with you that the backs of flowers are as lovely as the fronts!

  9. I love the way you've used shibori in your dahlia. I know I'm going against the crowd, but I do not like the legs dangling. Perhaps your bottom line could be not as straight or have a leaf resting against one of the legs. What ever you decide, it will be a stunning quilt, as usual.

  10. I am out of the group in a way - but the realism of the leaves and the stool - both are stunning - leaves me feeling that the stool needs to be supported on the ground. Having two legs floating in the air over the leaves feels odd, and even odder that the leaves are cut off. I can see it as if the white area is a platform that blocks the edge of the garden and the stool is on that at the front - but then the platform edge should be dead straight. It worries me that the stool legs are off the ground at the back.

But - I love the composition and the colours and my first thought was WOW!
